Modernizing Your Kitchen: 9 Kitchen Remodel Ideas

Modernizing Your Kitchen: 9 Kitchen Remodel Ideas

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It takes center stage as the place where your hungry family gathers. But you probably also want it to be more than a workhorse; you want it to be a space that you’re proud of and enjoy spending time in. While the all-white kitchen will probably never go out of style, there are lots of new kitchen remodel ideas for 2022 that will make you equally happy.

If your kitchen is begging for a remodel, here are 9 ideas to bring your space into 2022.

1. Navy Blue Cabinets

Ever since Goop’s New York offices were renovated with a navy blue kitchen, the navy blue cabinet trend has been on the rise.

You could incorporate the two-toned kitchen trend by having navy blue cabinets on the bottom and painting the upper cabinetry white. Or try light cabinets with a navy blue island.

2. Open Shelving

Top cupboards add plenty of storage, but they can also impact the sense of spaciousness in your kitchen. In 2020, more people are opting for no upper cabinets at all, or open shelving.

Open shelving is your opportunity to put your best cookware on display. You can also colour match your shelving to the walls if you want to really make your cookware the statement piece in your kitchen.

3. Going Green

We are increasingly aware of the environment in ways that we weren’t a decade ago. More and more people are seeking out environmentally friendly renovation options.

The colour green is trending too. It creates a connection to nature that feels relaxed and unfussy.

We’re seeing dramatic, sophisticated emerald greens through to softer moss greens. Depending on the type of green you choose, it can truly pop against white, but still feel clean and organic.

4. Natural Finishes

In 2022, we are loving naturally toned and textured benchtops as they add interest and character to a kitchen space but are still a timeless style.

Natural materials such as timber and bamboo are beautiful, timeless, and easy to incorporate into your kitchen. The raw tones will neutralise your space, add warmth and texture and can be worked into several kitchen styles.

Combine wood cabinets with clean, modern lines to keep it contemporary, instead of feeling stuck in the 80s. We’re seeing a preference for warmer toned woods, like walnut, ash and oak.

5. Statement Taps

Despite being small in size, great tapware packs a powerful design punch. Taps with unusual handles and interesting features are a great way to draw the eye and complement the space. Pair your statement tap with similar finishes for cupboard and draw grips to keep a consistent style.

6. Handle-less Cabinets

2022 may see us taking the minimalist kitchen trend even further with handle-less cabinets. This creates a more pared-back, streamlined look that focuses on the details in your cabinetry.

Quality improvements in push-open and close doors means that we can dispense with handles in both wall and base cabinets. If you prefer not to have push-open cupboards, then recessed handles provide the same sleek look and can be lined with contrasting colours and materials to add interest.

7. Matching Counters and Backsplashes

We’re seeing matching counters and backsplashes become increasingly popular — thanks to the desire for a more streamlined look, like we saw with handle-less cabinets.

Extending the countertop material up the backsplash streamlines the number of materials in a kitchen, which creates a cleaner, more contemporary look for 2020.

If you’re someone who struggles to make decisions in your kitchen renovation, you’ll also have the added benefit of having less materials to choose to finalise your kitchen design.

8. Matte colours

2022 will focus on matte finishes, in contrast to the shiny cabinetry that has been on trend in recent years . This could range from matte cabinets through to matte black hardware.

A matte finish looks flatter and won’t reflect any light, so it’s most suited to larger kitchens that are already filled with natural light. An extra bonus is that matte products are far better at hiding dirt, fingerprints, and scratches — a bonus for busy families full of sticky fingers.

9. Smart Tech

Technology will play an increasingly important role in our kitchens in 2022 and beyond. Nowadays, you can plan meals, manage schedules, multi-task and even stream your favourite Netflix shows—all right from your fridge.

Have you ever finished the last slice of bread and forgotten to add a new loaf to your shopping list? Technology can now solve that problem for you. The GeniCan attaches to your trash can, so you can scan items (or use the voice control feature) as you throw them out and instantly add them to your shopping list.

Soon, it won’t be so weird to talk to your microwave. One day, it might just talk back to you.
