After all the planning and time spent having your home renovated, the moment arrives when the project is complete.  Other than just enjoying your beautifully renovated space, what else can you expect? Here are a few things to think about:

1. Do a thorough walkthrough

Walk through the rooms that have been renovated and look for any outstanding items.  This could be as small as identifying some paint to be touched up, trim that needs to be caulked or discovering that one of the pendant lights in your kitchen hasn’t been installed yet.  Remember that no detail is too little and make sure all issues or deficiencies have been identified.

Discuss with your renovator what’s on their “punch list”.  A punch list is a list of tasks that needs to be completed to satisfy the terms of the construction contract.  When you’re doing your walkthrough, ensure any items you identify are included on that list.   Ask for a copy so that you can be satisfied that the items have been resolved.

2. Clean out your air vents

Plan to book someone to clean out the vents in your home once the reno is over.  Depending on the time of year, it isn’t always possible to keep vents closed during a renovation and as mentioned in our previous post, dust travels.  Having someone come in and clean out your HVAC system will ensure that dust and debris doesn’t continue to circulate throughout your home.

3. Smoke and CO2 detectors

Test your existing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or install new ones in the renovated space. Dust, paint fumes, etc. can damage detectors so it’s a good idea to make sure they’re still operable or invest in new ones.

4. Update your home insurance

Call your insurer and discuss the changes made to your home and whether or not you need to update your current plan.

5. Throw a party

Invite your family, friends and neighbours over to show off the results of your renovation.  This is also a nice way to say “thank you” to your neighbours as they may have had to deal with some renovation noise or debris during the project.

6. Spread the word

Referrals are one of the best sources for new projects for your contractor or renovator, so let people know you’re happy with their work.  You can do this by providing a testimonial for their website, adding a review on a site like Houzz, Google or just by telling your friends and family.

7. Enjoy your home

Make a wonderful meal in your beautiful new kitchen, take a long soak in your renovated bathroom, have a game night in your new family room.  Just take the time to enjoy your home again, especially now that it’s designed exactly to suit you!
