Whether you’re an eco-superhero intent on saving the planet or are just looking to save a few bucks in the long term, there are several reasons to be conscious of your home’s environmental footprint. At Kurmak Builders, we take our role as a green homebuilder and renovator seriously and we strive to minimize our environmental impact at every stage of the building process. In the interest of conservation and waste-reduction, we insist on ourselves and our trade partners adhering to the following principles.
- Using sustainable and locally sourced materials. We use durable, long-lasting and sustainably grown varieties of wood to build our custom homes to provide superior protection from inclement weather. Our eco-friendly options include low VOC paint, cork flooring, reclaimed wood and recycled glass. In order to cut shipping costs and reduce carbon emissions, we support local suppliers and materials wherever possible.
- Maximizing efficiency. We are committed to staying on top of the latest green technologies and have several options available upon request. Plumbing designed to conserve water, energy-efficient appliances, programmable thermostats, solar panels and motion activated lighting, are just a few examples.
- Employing heat-saving methods. Having built custom homes in Calgary for many years, we are intimately aware of the challenges presented by the city’s fluctuating climate. There is no shortage of ideas to keep your home at an optimal temperature, regardless of the season. Fireplaces, double-paned windows, heat-exchange systems and urethane foam insulation – these are just a few possibilities!
Once construction is complete, we ensure that up to 75% of our construction waste is recycled. Where possible, we donate salvageable items such as kitchen cabinetry to Habitat for Humanity to be used in the construction of subsidized housing. We are exceptionally proud to be a green homebuilder doing our part to protect and restore the planet.
